Alternative sites needed for seafood unloading in Kunak: Anil
KUNAK: Seafood unloading activities currently operating at Pangkalan Madai under a private company are said to be less effective and inefficient due to the narrow access route for fishing vessels, while also creating environmental issues such as foul odours that affect the well-being of nearby residents.

Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Assistant Minister, who is also Kunak Assemblyman Datuk Seri Anil Sandhu (pic), said he had received a protest letter from residents of Kampung Pangkalan Madai regarding the operations of a company managing seafood unloading activities there, describing the location as less strategic and responsible for unpleasant smells polluting the surrounding air.

“I take seriously all concerns voiced by the residents, especially issues related to pollution and the impact on the well-being of the local community.

“Previously, I had also expressed commitment to re-evaluating the docking locations for fishing vessels to unload their seafood catches,” he told the Daily Express, recently.

He noted that two strategic locations that could be considered by local authorities and relevant agencies for seafood unloading operations are Kg Pangkalan Jetty in Kunak and the jetty at Hampilan, Pangi.

“This proposal is important to reduce pollution risks and ensure the environment remains clean, orderly, and safe for nearby residents,” he said.

He added that the matter would be brought forward for discussion with relevant stakeholders to achieve the best solution without ignoring the voices and interests of the people as well as local development needs.

“I truly appreciate the concern shown by residents who have voiced their views in a proper and orderly manner. Cooperation from all parties is essential in ensuring the welfare and well-being of the people remain a priority,” said Anil.

Since 2020, the Majlis Daerah Kunak had directed fishing boats to unload their catches at the privately-owned Pangkalan Madai landing jetty, among others to reduce traffic congestion along Jalan Pangkalan Kunak leading to the local fish market.

However, the directive was withdrawn in October 2021, allowing fishing boats and vessels to choose either the Kg Pangkalan Landing Jetty beside the wet market under the supervision of the local authority, or the privately-owned landing jetty at Pangkalan Madai.
