LAHAD DATU: Police detained two men linked to separate traffic offences captured in viral social media videos.

District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Dzulbaharin Ismail said the first video, uploaded on May 7, showed a blue Perodua Bezza making an illegal U-turn by driving over a cement road divider along Jalan Pantai.

Acting swiftly on the footage, traffic enforcement personnel from the Lahad Datu Police Headquarters tracked down the vehicle and its driver shortly after the video surfaced online.

“The vehicle and driver were detained in front of a school before being brought to the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Office for further action,” he said.

Initial investigations revealed that the 42-year-old Filipino driver had taken the route in an attempt to reach his destination more quickly.

In a separate case, Dzulbaharin said another video uploaded on Facebook on May 8 showed a red Proton Saga FL travelling against the flow of traffic from Jalan Pantai towards the traffic lights near the army camp in Lahad Datu.

Police immediately launched an investigation and successfully identified both the owner and driver of the vehicle. Both later appeared at the Lahad Datu Traffic Office on the same day.

Preliminary investigations found that the driver, a 43-year-old local man, claimed he acted out of panic due to an emergency situation.

“Both cases are being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” Dzulbaharin said, adding that witnesses to the incidents are encouraged to contact Inspector Jafri Junat at 089-881255 or visit the Lahad Datu Police Headquarters.

He also urged road users to obey traffic regulations and avoid reckless actions that could endanger themselves and others.

At the same time, Dzulbaharin encouraged the public to continue sharing information on traffic offences to help authorities maintain road safety and public order in the district.
