Better roads, internet add to Kaamatan joy
Among the highlights included the decorated boat competition.
PAGALUNGAN: Improved road network facilities and increased internet coverage have enabled large-scale programmes to be held here.

Pensiangan MP Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the development transformation being pursued in the area is now being enjoyed by the local community.

“For the first time, the Nabawan and Pagalungan Sub-District Kaamatan Festival opening ceremony has been held here, reflecting the success of infrastructure development in rural areas.

“Improved road networks and increased internet coverage allow large-scale programmes to be organised more effectively for the wellbeing of the rural population.

Arthur said regardless of how much physical development is brought to Pensiangan, cultural roots and identity must remain a priority and be preserved.

“The Kaamatan Festival not only symbolises gratitude for the harvest but also serves as an important platform for the Nabawan community to strengthen unity in the spirit of family,” he said.

He also urged that the tradition of river transport be maintained and preserved, noting that boats remain an essential mode of daily transportation for residents and a unique cultural identity, as well as a potential tourist attraction.

Meanwhile, in the Sugandoi singing competition, Ivy Apang was crowned champion of the open category, taking home RM2,000 in cash, along with a trophy, certificate, hamper, and the Best Performance Award.

Second place went to Azirah Milya Jamil, who received RM1,500 and also won the Best Vocal Award, while Scholestina Jubilik placed third, earning RM1,000.

In the Dazanak category, Shira Ayumi Zainuddin emerged as champion, followed by Mikhaarthazalna Abdullah in second place and Adzin Izzan Azlie in third.

The first- and second-place winners in both the Open and Dazanak categories will represent the Nabawan District and Pagalungan Sub-District, respectively, at the state-level competition at Hongkod Koisan KDCA.

In addition to Sugandoi, a Decorated Boat Competition was also held, with Kampung Kuala Tumalasak emerging as champion, while Kampung Silungai and Kampung Lumpagas secured second and third place, respectively.

Also present were Celebration Main Committee Chairman Marshal Anthony @ Idham; Implementation Committee Chairperson Agnes A. Bacon; Pagalungan Sub-District Assistant Officer Hasinin Kinsim; and Nabawan Assemblyman’s representative Musa Banaran.
