KENINGAU: A toddler was rescued by firefighters after being accidentally locked inside a running car at the night market here on Tuesday.
District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said they received an emergency call at 6.33pm regarding the incident.
Six personnel, led by operations commander PBK I Ranizan, was dispatched at 6.34pm and arrived at the scene within a minute.
The incident occurred about 400 metres from the station, near a row of stalls opposite. Upon arrival at 6.35pm, firefighters found a distressed couple beside a red Proton Saga, with their one-year-three-month-old daughter locked inside.
The child was alone in the vehicle, which was still running, and could be heard crying. The child had been trapped for about 15 minutes before help arrived.
Initial investigations found that the parents had stepped out of the car to retrieve a stroller from the boot after arriving at the night market.
The vehicle’s auto-lock system activated after the boot was shut, leaving the key inside the car with the engine still running.
Firefighters used special equipment to unlock the vehicle without breaking the window.
No injuries were reported. The operation ended at 6.41pm.
