SANDAKAN: The government is considering a planned housing scheme for Kampung Bahagia following the fire that destroyed over 1,000 homes on Sunday.
Deputy Human Resources Minister and Batu Sapi MP Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar said the proposal hinges on the gazettement of the 60-acre village, which would enable more structured and safer redevelopment.
He said formal gazettement would provide a stronger basis for comprehensive planning, including the construction of organised housing for affected residents.
The proposal comes after repeated fire incidents in the area, highlighting the urgent need for safer and more systematic housing.
Under the plan, homes would be built to safety standards and equipped with basic amenities such as water, electricity and proper road access for emergencies.
The government is also exploring options including Public Housing Projects (PPR) or organised residential lots as alternatives for displaced residents.

Khairul said the aim is to ensure residents can return to safer, more comfortable living conditions, with further discussions to be held with relevant agencies and the local community.
Assistance for fire victims is currently being distributed. Sandakan MP Vivian Wong and Sekong assemblyman Alias Sani were also present at the site.
