The needs of all communities looked into: Ewon
One of the Kavadi bearers yesterday.
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister III and Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship, and Transportation Datuk Ewon Benedick said the increase in allocation for non-Islamic religious bodies in Sabah demonstrates the state government’s commitment to religious diversity.

It also reflects the seriousness of the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Haji Noor in developing the needs of all religious communities in Sabah inclusively and equitably.

“The allocation which has been increased to RM90 million is a manifestation of the Sabah Government’s strong commitment to ensuring that the development and welfare needs of all religious followers are addressed,” he said, after attending the Thaipusam celebration at the Sri Subramaniar Lok Kawi Temple, Sunday.

The Member of Parliament for Penampang, said respect for religious and cultural festivals celebrated by various races and religions in Malaysia is a key foundation in upholding the Federation, particularly in Sabah, which has long been a model of tolerance and unity among the people.

“Earlier I was in Kg Sugud not only to attend the service but also to hear the church’s needs. They (the church officials) informed me and Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin (ADUN Moyog) of the need to expand the church’s space,” he said.

As MP for Penampang, he has allocated RM150,000 to the church for the construction of a concrete parking area.

“I visited the site to see the implementation of the project, and the feedback from the congregation was very positive,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai highlighted the importance of showing unity and inclusiveness despite religious differences, emphasising that this unity is a defining feature of Sabah’s identity.

“It’s not just about tolerance; it’s about celebrating what each community brings to the table and how these diverse elements collectively strengthen the social fabric of Sabah.

“This approach not only fosters a peaceful environment but also makes Sabah an attractive destination for travellers interested in experiencing this rare blend of cultures and traditions,” he said.

He added that despite the small size of the Indian community in Sabah, the government’s respect for their presence is paramount.

“The diversity of religions, ethnicities, and cultures in Sabah should be protected as it is the state’s strength,” he concluded, wishing all in Sabah and throughout Malaysia a happy Thaipusam day.
