KUALA LUMPUR: Work-related stress may be one of the factors leading individuals to become involved in the LGBT community, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan,
Harian Metro and
World of Buzz reported.
Citing a 2017 study, he said social influence, sexual experiences and other personal factors also play a role. The study suggested that a combination of these elements could contribute to the development of LGBT-related behaviour.

He was responding in a written parliamentary reply to Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PN–Rantau Panjang), who asked for updated data on LGBT trends in Malaysia, including age groups, ethnic composition and main contributing factors.
However, Zulkifli said the government does not have official statistics on the size of the LGBT population in Malaysia.
Responding to a parliamentary question from Hulu Terengganu MP, Datuk Rosol Wahid, regarding the number of LGBT-related arrests and prosecutions between 2022 and 2025, he said a total of 135 cases were recorded.
