Sabah welcomes Singapore’s decision to open consulate

Kota Kinabalu: The State Government welcomed Singapore’s decision to establish a consulate in Kota Kinabalu this year, describing it as a strategic move that will significantly strengthen bilateral relations between the State and the republic.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the establishment of the consulate carries considerable strategic importance, encompassing key areas such as the economy, diplomacy, investment, trade and security.

“The State Government welcomes the opening of the Singapore Consulate in Sabah this year. It is a positive development that will further strengthen the existing ties between Sabah and Singapore,” he said in a statement, Friday.

Hajiji conveyed this following a courtesy call by Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon, at his office in Menara Kinabalu.

During the meeting, Menon confirmed that Singapore will open consulates in both Sabah and Sarawak after receiving approval from the Malaysian Government last month.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the enhanced diplomatic presence would expand bilateral cooperation, unlocking greater investment and trade opportunities that would directly contribute to Sabah’s development.

In light of the development, Hajiji also invited Singaporean investors to explore competitive sectors in Sabah and encouraged more tourists from the republic to visit the State.
