SEMPORNA: A crew is missing while four others were injured when two passenger boats collided at 0.3 nautical miles east of Semporna Tourist jetty, here, Friday.
Semporna Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Amir Shubli said the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kota Kinabalu received an emergency alert via 999 at 11.30am. Preliminary information found that the first boat that carried five crew was severely damaged.
"Four victims including the boat skipper were reported injured and rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
"However, one identified as Rosman Kandau, 24, was reported missing,” he said.
According to Amir, the second boat was carrying two crew and all were reported safe. Search and Rescue operation (CARILAMAT) was activated at 1.50pm to search for the missing crew.
The operation was carried out using assets from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and Marine Police Force (MPF).
"The operation covered three nautical miles and still ongoing,” he said.
