Kota Kinabalu: A Parti Warisan member said it is not true to claim that the Chinese community regretted supporting the opposition during the recent 17th Sabah Election.
“The Chinese community’s support for Warisan during election wiped out all DAP seats and left Pakatan Harapan (PH) with only one seat (Melalap). This firmly reflects the true sentiment of the Chinese community and urban voters,” said Datuk Seri Winston Liaw.
He was referring to the remarks by veteran politician Datuk David Chong Ket Sui over the Chinese community’s support for Warisan in the recent election.
Chong had put the blame on Warisan Vice-President Datuk Wong Hong Jun, who during the campaign urged the community to give it full support while claiming that Warisan would win 41 seats and form the government.
Liaw said Chong’s statement was nothing more than a narrow and naive political assassination attempt against Wong, adding that Sabahans are not regretting their decision and will, in fact, continue to support local parties in the coming general election.
Liaw said the results sent a signal to the Madani Government that, for the remainder of its tenure, it must do much better in terms of policy implementation towards the Chinese community.
“The Chinese also prefer local party representation rather than allowing Malayan parties to rule Sabah, in order to protect our beautiful culture for future generations,” he said.
He added that the Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) communities also voted for local parties, which saw PKR and Umno secure one and six seats, respectively, a clear mandate from the people of Sabah.
“The Madani Government will be very cautious in implementing negative moves affecting Sabahans, such as abolishing diesel subsidies, gas cylinder subsidies, reviewing the e-invoice exemption limit and reshuffling the Federal Cabinet by appointing more ethnic Chinese ministers, among others,” he said.
