Kota Kinabalu: The Grace Charity Fund will be organising a blood donation drive, in an effort to support patients suffering from thalassemia who require regular blood transfusions to survive, from 10am to 5pm, at City Mall, here, Saturday.
Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that prevents the body from producing normal haemoglobin, resulting in chronic and severe anaemia. Patients often experience fatigue, weakness, pale complexion and, in severe cases, strain on the heart due to insufficient oxygen supply to the body.

For patients with moderate to severe thalassemia, regular blood transfusions from an early age are essential to support normal growth, protect vital organs and improve overall quality of life. Many require transfusions every few weeks.
However, blood cannot be produced artificially and depends entirely on voluntary donations from healthy individuals. Shortages in blood supply may lead to delays in treatment and pose serious risks to patients’ lives.
A representative from the Grace Charity Fund said the initiative aims to raise public awareness and encourage community participation to ensure a stable and continuous supply of blood for patients in need.
“Each bag of donated blood represents hope and a chance for patients to continue living, learning and working,” the spokesperson said, adding that professional medical personnel will be present throughout the event to ensure donors’ safety and comfort.
The blood donation drive will be held from 10am to 5pm on the first floor of City Mall. Members of the public, including first-time and regular donors, are encouraged to participate.
