KUALA LUMPUR: Halal-certified hotels and food premises may display Christmas decorations as long as halal standards are not compromised, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan,
The Star reported.
He said there is no prohibition on Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) holders using festive decorations linked to non-Islamic celebrations, provided the principles of halalan thoyyiban are maintained.

Zulkifli said the position is in line with a 2023 decision by Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim), which allows images, illustrations or non-permanent decorations related to other religious festivities.
However, he stressed that decorations must not involve religious worship equipment and must not be associated with the halal logo or SPHM certification itself.
He added that the same guidelines apply to kitchens, restaurants and hotel outlets that hold halal certification, while encouraging operators to seek clarification from relevant halal authorities when needed.
Zulkifli said cooperation between Jakim, state Islamic religious authorities and industry players was essential to ensure halal policies are applied prudently while preserving social harmony.
His remarks follow comments by Melaka education, higher learning and religious affairs committee chairman Rahman Mariman, who said Christmas decorations are permitted in hotel lobbies and common areas, with restrictions limited to halal-certified kitchens and dining outlets.
