KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Law Society (SLS) welcomes the proposed amendments to the Legal Profession Act 1976 to include representation from Sabah and Sarawak on the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB).
“This is a long-overdue step that finally acknowledges decisions made by the LPQB directly affect the standards, integrity and future of the legal profession in Sabah and Sarawak, and it is unacceptable for those decisions to be made without us at the table,” said SLS President Datuk Mohamed Nazim Maduarin, in a statement, Friday.
He said for decades, the entry routes into the Sabah Bar, whether through the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or law degrees from public universities, have been shaped entirely by a board without any representation from neither Sabah nor Sarawak.
According to the SLS, this absence has had real consequences, forcing Sabah and Sarawak to accept and enforce qualification pathways without any opportunity to scrutinise or influence the standards behind them.
