Action on Likas, Penampang pothole woes
MC personnel check on the condition of the road leading to the sheltered carparks at this block inside Country Heights Apartments.
CITY Hall plans to rehabilitate a section of Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, while the management company (MC) for some apartments – off Jalan Minintod-Bantayan – is arranging to attend to some of the roads within the compound.

This follows separate feedback from a Likas Bay Public Park user and Penampang driver about the lack of maintenance carried out on these stretches.

The former said the road, which ran along one side of the park, was in a bad shape.

The asphalt was rife with cracks and potholes, according to him, which didn’t make this recreation area an ideal venue to host public events, let alone state-level celebrations.

The Penampang apartment-dweller, on the other hand, spoke out about the pothole-laden stretch leading to the sheltered carpark for her block.

She vented her frustrations over the hefty workshop-costs which she had incurred because the uneven road surface was constantly damaging the undercarriage of her vehicle.

Both individuals provided Hotline with the pertinent details regarding their grievances, which were forwarded to the relevant parties.

A spokeswoman for City Hall’s Traffic and Transport Department (TTD) said it intended to “reinstate” the road at the Park, which covers a total area of 2,400 square metres.

“The reinstatement involves pavement strengthening and resurfacing of both sections,” she said.

“Should our funding allow, this will be done at some point over the next two months. If not the effort to seal the stretch will be included in the Department’s list of works for 2026.”

A member of the RPG touches up one of the newly patched sections at the Park. She said an inspection was made of the Park on Friday, following the public outcry over road woes there.

“Our personnel found that depressions had formed in many places. They noticed that the asphalt had cracked, or had eroded away, in other parts of the road.”

She estimated that the affected section of the road covered an area of about 180 square metres.

The agency’s Road-Patching-Gang (RPG) went to the recreation area later that same day, with a lorry load of aggregate.

“Five of the team members used rakes to fill up the potholes with this material. The RPG patched up the potholes with asphalt on the following day.”

The spokeswoman said three TTD senior officers double-checked on this remedial action on Monday.

“Mayor Dato’ Seri Dr Sabin Samitah and several Department heads personally came down to the Park to have a look at the road yesterday.

“The group also checked on some of the other public amenities here, with a view to making improvements to any which did not meet City Hall’s standards.”

Meanwhile, the MC for Country Heights Apartments will accord priority to dealing with the potholes which have formed in the roads near two blocks at the property, including the one leading to Block L.

A spokesman for the firm said a preliminary investigation last week revealed that the damage could be the result of water ponding on these stretches during a downpour.

TTD staff verifying the presence of the potholes in this part of Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens.“We may have the pipes beneath the roads replaced so that the run-off can be more effectively channelled away to the nearest monsoon drain,” he said.

“If we decide to proceed, the affected stretches will be excavated in stages to install new perforated pipes.”

He said the roads would be resurfaced from end to end once the drainage problem had been addressed.

“We hope to have a fresh layer of asphalt applied to these stretches as soon as possible.”
