JAKARTA: At least 20 people remain missing after violent protests in Indonesia over lavish perks for lawmakers, rights group KontraS said on Sept 2.

Six people have been killed since unrest erupted last week, further fueled by footage of police killing a delivery driver.

KontraS said the missing were reported in Bandung, Depok, and several Jakarta districts. Police have arrested over 1,200 people since Aug 25.

The protests, the worst since President Prabowo Subianto took office in 2024, forced him to roll back the perks.

More demonstrations were planned for Sept 2 by women’s groups in Jakarta.

The UN has urged an investigation into alleged excessive use of force by security forces.
