KUDAT: Free human papillomavirus (HPV DNA) testing provided by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) has screened nearly 21,000 women across Sabah since 2019, detecting dozens of pre-cancerous and cancerous cases in their early stages.

Sabah Women, Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister Datuk Julita Majungki said the HPV DNA test is the most effective screening method for detecting HPV infections, which are the primary cause of cervical cancer.

“Of the 20,643 women screened, 1,868 tested positive for HPV, with 33 pre-cancer cases and two cervical cancer cases identified early,” she said at the launching of the 2026 State-Level Cervical Cancer Awareness Month Programme held at the Dewan Terbuka Matunggong on Saturday.

“Early detection allows immediate treatment before the disease becomes serious, thereby increasing recovery chances and saving lives,” she added.  

She noted that HPV DNA testing at private hospitals costs between RM300 and RM500 per examination, which has been a major factor preventing rural women from seeking health screenings.

“Providing free testing since 2019 not only eases the burden on the people but also bridges the gap in healthcare access between urban and rural areas,” she said.

She also called on men to play a supportive role by encouraging their wives, mothers and female family members to undergo regular examinations as a preventive measure.

During the programme, 300 attendees took advantage of free HPV DNA testing, subsidised mammogram registration, and complimentary health screenings.
