PAPAR: A 10-foot female crocodile has been captured after taking baited hooks set in the Kawang River. Villagers are still hoping efforts to catch another estimated between 15 and 20 feet long will continue to eliminate the threat posed by the reptiles in the area.
Kawang Village Head Salleh Miasin said the female crocodile took the bait at 9am on Monday before it was successfully captured by the Wildlife Department.

He said of the six baited hooks installed by the department along the river, only one had been taken by a crocodile so far.
“Residents hope the remaining hooks will also be taken so that more crocodiles can be captured,” he said when contacted by Daily Express, Tuesday.
Salleh said the threat to villagers remains as long as other crocodiles believed to be inhabiting the Kawang River have not been caught.
He said efforts to capture the reptiles must continue until all crocodiles posing a danger to residents are removed.
“This serves as a warning to anglers who enjoy fishing along the riverbanks, especially children, local residents and fishermen, to exercise greater caution whenever they board their boats or fish along the river,” he said.
Fishermen who rely on the river for livelihood must remain vigilant while carrying out their daily activities.
He said they should always check their surroundings carefully before boarding their boats, as crocodiles can appear suddenly and attack without warning.
