Trading Card Games deserve support: Group
Some players could not go far to represent Sabah due to financial constraints.
PENAMPANG: Trading Card Games (TCG) can serve as an effective platform for cognitive development and youth empowerment, and should be given greater recognition and support by the government, according to the Sabah Trading Card Games Enthusiasts and Collectors Association (Strageca).

Its president, Aliff Azmie, said TCG is more than just a hobby, as it helps develop communication skills, confidence, critical thinking, and strategic decision-making, particularly among students.

“TCG is a healthy activity that builds both social and intellectual skills. It also trains players to think strategically and solve problems creatively,” he said during a three-day event held in conjunction with the launch of Magic: The Gathering – Secret of Strixhaven at R916 game store, Megalong, Penampang.

He added that Sabah youths have already represented the state at national level, with some advancing to international competitions representing Malaysia.

Cosmobeauté Malaysia and beautyexpo will expand into East Malaysia with the launch of the Cosmobeauté Malaysia Borneo Festival 2026 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) from May 25 to 26.
However, limited exposure and funding often force talented players to withdraw due to high participation costs.

“There are players who qualify to represent Sabah but have to pull out because they cannot afford travel expenses. This shows the need for stronger support so local talent is not left behind,” he said.

The programme aimed to attract new players, especially students, while introducing TCG to the public and addressing misconceptions about the hobby among parents. Around 20 participants joined on the first day, with more than 50 expected throughout the event.

R916 store owner Ericson Lotidis welcomed the initiative, saying the response was encouraging and reflected growing interest in TCG among young people.

Participant Aaron Tan described his first experience playing Magic: The Gathering as both challenging and enjoyable, highlighting the game’s strategic elements.

Another participant, Faylinn Tan, said the supportive community helped ease the learning curve, noting that TCG requires strong critical thinking skills, which makes it engaging.

The event is seen as part of broader efforts to promote youth development through intellectual and social activities, while nurturing emerging talent in the TCG scene.
