Kota Kinabalu: State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Assistant Minister Datuk Ruslan Muharam called on the public to make use of idle land for farming as an immediate and long-term strategy to limit the impact of ongoing global uncertainties.
He said the public can grow crops such as cassava, rice, vegetables and fruits as a proactive plan to prepare for possible future crises and reduce dependence on external food sources.
“This is not just a suggestion but part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry. The Government is actively encouraging and supporting communities to engage in farming activities,” he said during the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, recently.
He said the Ministry is also actively promoting agricultural initiatives to encourage people to make use of available fertile land, as many rely heavily on purchasing food despite having access to unused agricultural land.
He said beyond supply stability, self-sufficient food production is also an economic opportunity for households.
“By cultivating unused land, families can reduce their daily expenses and potentially generate additional income, as well as positioning agriculture as a key pillar of resilience at both the State and household levels,” he added.
Ruslan, who is also PBS Vice President and Lumadan Assemblyman, reassured that the State’s food supply –especially rice – is stable despite public anxiety.
“The Government has guaranteed sufficient rice stocks in the State, and made it clear that there is no need for consumers to rush into bulk purchases as supply chains remain secure for now,” he said.
He acknowledged the potential prolonged crises in the Middle East, and encouraged the public to remain calm and trust that adequate measures are in place to ensure a stable food supply.
The event also saw the distribution of Aidilfitri donations to orphans and the underprivileged (asnaf) by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor.
Also present were PBS President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Joachim Gunsalam, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Youth Development, Sports Development and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin.
