SINGAPORE: A restaurant in Geylang has come under scrutiny after charging a family S$2 for “outside drinks” when children drank water from their own bottles, the Mothership reported.
The incident, which occurred on Feb 7, gained attention after being reported online, sparking debate over the eatery’s policy prohibiting outside food and drinks.
The customer said he was unaware of the charge until receiving the bill, which listed two items for outside drinks, while staff maintained the fee was part of standard policy.
The restaurant said signage was displayed and customers were informed of the rule, adding the policy is necessary as it also sells beverages and operates as a business.
The case has triggered mixed public reaction online, with some criticising the charge as excessive while others defended it as a business practice, as the restaurant’s ratings dropped following the controversy.
