TAWAU: A 68-year-old woman who suffered a stroke was rescued by members of the public before a fire destroyed a rented shoplot unit at Tanjung Market opposite the UTC here on Thursday.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin said the fire destroyed 90 per cent of a permanent third-floor unit comprising six rented rooms and also damaged an adjacent storeroom by 80 per cent.
He said 15 firefighters led by Operations Commander PBK II Azlan Awangki were deployed after receiving an emergency call at 1.21pm and arrived at the scene four minutes later.
Jemishin said firefighters brought the blaze under control at 1.45pm using two 300-foot hose lines with three water jets supplied by a water tanker and a nearby fire hydrant before concluding the operation at 3.15pm after ensuring the area was safe.
He said no casualties were reported, while the cause of the fire and the extent of the losses remain under investigation.
