LOS ANGELES: Sam Asghari said his former wife Britney Spears had been “oppressed” by people around her as he spoke about her struggles during a television interview.
The 32-year-old made the remarks while appearing on Piers Morgan Uncensored hosted by Piers Morgan.
Asghari, who separated from Spears in August 2023 after 14 months of marriage, said he continues to support the singer’s wellbeing.
“Coming from the country of Iran and seeing women being oppressed… she was also oppressed by many people who took advantage of her,” he said.
He added that although they were married for one year, they had been together for seven years and his respect for Spears remains.
Asghari said Spears should be allowed privacy, adding that “everybody makes mistakes” and that she is a strong woman who can recover.
Spears, known for the song Toxic, was detained by the California Highway Patrol last Wednesday on suspicion of drink-driving and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
