Authorities also found suspected improvised explosive devices in a vehicle linked to the deceased attacker.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the antisemitic attack, carried out on the first day of Hanukkah, struck at the heart of the nation and that an attack on Jewish Australians was an attack on all Australians.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the assault and urged stronger action against antisemitism.
Witnesses described sustained gunfire, panic as crowds fled the beach, and multiple victims lying wounded as emergency services responded shortly before 7pm.
