IEM Vice-Chair provides in-depth briefing on Outcome-based Professional Interview

Kota Kinabalu: The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch held a technical briefing this week on the Outcome-Based Professional Interview (PI) 2.0, presented by the Branch’s Vice Chairman I, Ir Ts Tan KJ, JP.

The session attracted approximately 30 engineers, including the Rural Water Supply Branch Chief Assistant Director Ts Abd Halim Ag Marali, top senior engineers as well as several District Engineers and senior engineering officers from the Sabah Water Department.

With more than 38 years of engineering experience, Tan provided an in-depth explanation of the modernised assessment structure of PI 2.0. 

“PI 2.0 is not merely an examination, but a platform for engineers to demonstrate real professional competencies, ethical conduct, technical judgment, and responsibility for public safety—core elements that strengthen engineers’ competitiveness and support the professionalisation of the industry,” he said during the session on Tuesday.

In addition, Tan emphasised the essential technical competencies required of water engineers, such as water supply systems, hydraulic design, asset management, non-revenue water (NRW) control, regulatory compliance, and sustainable engineering practices—all fundamental to improving the overall quality of water services in Sabah.

The session concluded with an open Q&A segment, where participants—including District Engineers—actively raised questions on PI documentation, project selection, and effective methods of demonstrating professional competencies, reflecting a strong interest in professional certification and continuous technical development.

The briefing ended on a positive note, reaffirming IEM Sabah Branch’s commitment to advancing engineering professionalism and supporting the enhancement of technical capacity within Sabah’s water sector.
