Covid-19: 14 deaths, 3,631 new cases nationwide, 526 in Sabah
PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 3,631 Covid-19 cases and 14 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 2,944 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 125,288.

In a press conference, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 165,371.

There are 39,464 active cases with 238 patients being treated in intensive care and 96 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 14 deaths bring the number of fatalities to 619.

The 14 deaths involved 12 Malaysians and two foreigners from Perak, Selangor, Labuan, Kedah, Kelantan and Sarawak.

They were aged between 46 and 85. All had chronic illnesses.

Selangor continued to record the highest number of cases with 1,199 infections, followed by Sabah with 526 and Kuala Lumpur with 521.

Noor Hisham said 884 of the cases in Selangor came from active close contact screenings being carried out in the field and existing clusters.

Meanwhile, on cases in other states, Noor Hisham said Johor reported 368 cases in the last 24 hours, while Sarawak reported 156 and Negeri Sembilan 139.

Meanwhile, Perak reported 135 cases followed by Kelantan (133), Penang (124), Melaka (122), Kedah (114), Terengganu (33), Pahang (31), Putrajaya (26), Perlis (three) and Labuan (one).

Some 310 cases today were related to prison and immigration depot clusters, namely the Jalan Sungai Jelok prison (217), Jalan Harapan prison (47), Tembok Nanas (22), Damai Pelangi (19), Tembok Mempaga (three), Matmbai (one) and Telok Mas (one) clusters.

There were seven imported cases reported.

The health ministry reported nine new clusters today affecting Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sarawak, Kedah, Terengganu and Pahang.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the clusters are the Jalan Sungai Jelok prison cluster in Selangor; Jalan Masjid cluster in Kuala Lumpur; Jalan Taruka, Taman Sayong Pinang and Sri Gading clusters in Johor; Rakut cluster in Sarawak; Kupang cluster in Kedah; Kebor Air cluster in Terengganu; and the Rantau Cempaka cluster involving Pahang and Selangor.

The Jalan Sungai Jelok cluster involving Hulu Langat, Selangor was detected when the first few cases tested positive today (Jan 19) after targeted screenings at the Kajang Women’s Prison.

There were 439 individuals screened of whom 217 have tested positive so far.

Meanwhile, the Jalan Masjid cluster was first detected during a targeted workplace screening at a textile company in Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur, on Jan 11. The cluster has since affected Lembah Pantai and Kepong in Kuala Lumpur.

So far, 120 individuals have been screened, of whom 16 tested positive.

On the Jalan Taruka cluster in Johor, Noor Hisham said the factory workplace cluster was identified today (Jan 19) with a total of 38 positive cases out of the 108 tested so far. The cluster involves the Tampoi industrial area in Johor Bharu.

The Taman Sayong Pinang cluster involves Kota Tinggi, Johor, with the index case testing positive on Jan 7 after close-contact screenings. The cluster involves a family gathering which took place at Taman Sayong Pinang.

As at Jan 19, 104 people have been screened with 18 testing positive.

Noor Hisham added that the Sri Gading cluster involves Batu Pahat, Johor with the index case testing positive on Jan 16 following symptomatic screenings.

A total of 48 people have been screened with seven coming back positive.

The Rakut cluster from Miri, Sarawak was detected after an individual was found positive on Jan 13 following close-contact screenings. The cluster was traced to a wedding at Sungai Rakut, Jalan Kampung Bakam in Miri.

A total of 33 individuals were screened, of whom 10 tested positive.

Meanwhile, the Kupang cluster involves Baling, Kedah with the index case testing positive on Jan 16 following symptomatic screenings.

There were 54 individuals screened, of whom 14 tested positive.

Meanwhile, the Kebor Air cluster involves Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Setiu and Dungun in Terengganu, with the index case testing positive on Jan 16 after close-contact screenings. The cluster involves two public education institutions in Kuala Terengganu.

The cluster has since reported a total of 18 cases from screenings involving 264 close-contacts.

Finally, the Rantau Cempaka cluster involves Maran, Pahang and Hulu Langat, Selangor with the index case testing positive on Jan 9 after developing symptoms. The cluster was traced to a family gathering at Kampung Felda Cempaka Jengka 2.

There were 57 people screened so far, of whom 14 tested positive.
