PUTATAN: Awareness of early cervical cancer detection is crucial in strengthening public knowledge and encouraging healthier behaviour among women, particularly within the local community, said Putatan Member of Parliament, Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya.

He said that public awareness on the importance of prevention from an early stage and at the same time continuously keeping up with current developments is essential.

“Globally, cervical cancer is ranked fourth as a cause of death among women.

“Most of the cases diagnosed are at a late stage, namely stage three and four.

“In this regard, I urge women to undergo screening and pap-smear tests for the early detection of cervical cancer,” he said.

Shahelmey said this during the officiating of the launching of the Health Education Project organized by the Ministry of Health Malaysia Training Institute (ILKKM) in collaboration with the Putatan Health Clinic, on Saturday.

Elaborating further, Shahelmey said that the programme themed Early Detection of Cervical Cancer Ensures Women’s Well-being is very important in ensuring an increase in women’s health awareness in the district.

“The initiative of this programme is very much welcomed to provide awareness to women, especially regarding the importance of undergoing pap-smear tests for the early detection of cervical cancer.

“Women’s health screening examination services can be obtained at any health premises, whether government or private.

“I remind everyone to always pay attention to their respective health conditions, prioritize this matter and undergo health screenings regularly,” he said.

Also present were Penampang Area Health Officer Dr Eupharasia Anak Bari and Deputy Academic Director of ILKKM Jaffir Hashim.
