Enforce the Animal Welfare Enactment: NGO
IT seems that enforcement is something that is hard to come by in Sabah. Huge meetings were held with ministers, department heads and dignitaries when the Animal Welfare Enactment 2015 was passed to the thrill and joy of animal NGOs.

However, that joy was short-lived. Today’s enforcement is very poor and it is a common sight that owned dogs are allowed out of their home compound without supervision.

These owners should not keep a dog as a pet unless they really and truly love dogs. It is also good for owners to walk their dogs on leash too for both the dog and the owner. It need not be a long walk even 10-15 minutes is good enough. However the perfect time would be at least 20mins to half an hour

The authorities should give a first warning if they want to be kind or fine the owner on the spot if their dog is allowed out alone. It is ridiculous to capture the dog to dump as it is not the dog’s fault but the owner; and knowing these owners they will simply just get another dog.

We have written about this umpteenth times but to no avail. This results in animal cruelty when a dog is dumped cruelly at a landfill where there is no proper food, shelter, water etc.

There will also be fights with existing dogs there. Worst of all these dogs are not neutered or spayed so there will be innocent puppies born to suffer there. Animal cruelty to the hilt.

How can this country progress if laws are not enforced and everyone turns a blind eye?

It is time to move forward and enforce all laws strictly.

We do hope the government will take note of this and enforce the laws seriously and not make Sabah a laughing stock.

Sabah can set an example to the rest of Malaysia as far as animal rights are concerned. Let’s do it today!
