BEAUFORT: The local rubber industry made history when the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) branch in Beaufort successfully produced its first downstream product – natural latex pillows on May 29.
This proactive step is seen as a major paradigm shift in efforts to add value to the State’s raw rubber commodity, thereby demonstrating the capability of local agencies to produce high-quality finished goods.

A recent working visit by Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar to the processing factory provided strong recognition of LIGS’ commitment to advancing the transformation of the commodity sector.
The highly anticipated innovative product is scheduled to enter the market in mid-July. Its introduction highlights increasingly advanced local processing technology, while management expresses strong hopes that the latex pillows will penetrate the domestic market before expanding to the international market in the near future.
Jamawi described the achievement as proof of the ministry’s commitment to ensuring local products can compete globally.
The launch of the latex pillows also brings significant economic ripple effects, particularly in strengthening the income of local settlers and rubber tappers.
Through factory-scale production of downstream products, demand for local natural liquid latex is expected to become more stable and consistent.
Previously, local rubber was mostly exported in raw block form, making it highly vulnerable to fluctuations in global market prices. Processing rubber into latex pillows, however, provides higher returns through value-added production.
In line with this, a campaign supporting Beaufort products is being actively mobilised to raise public awareness of the quality of locally produced natural rubber goods.
The public is encouraged to support these products, as each purchase directly contributes to the sustainability of income and improved living standards for rubber tappers across Beaufort and Sabah.
The latex pillows are distinguished by their advantages over synthetic alternatives, including ergonomic design, durability, and anti-dust mite properties, while offering premium sleeping comfort and health benefits.
The success of this initial production is expected to serve as a stepping stone toward a larger industrial landscape in the area.
Industry players and the community hope this milestone will encourage the establishment of more downstream processing factories in Beaufort in the future.
The expansion of such facilities is also expected to stimulate local economic growth and create significant employment opportunities for Beaufort’s youth in technical, management, and manufacturing fields.
From Beaufort to the world, LIGS latex pillows are poised to become a symbol of pride for Sabah’s emerging commodity products.
