KENINGAU: Inter United FC (IUFC) yet again placed Sabah and Malaysia on the map after emerging champ in the Under-14 (U-14) category at the Maxim Area International Cup 2026 in Brunei, held over two days recently.
The achievement is seen as a source of pride for Sabahans, especially those in the interior, and is expected to inspire more young people to stay active in sports and represent the state and country on the international stage.
The team, made up of young players from Keningau, Pensiangan and the Pagalungan area in Nabawan, defeated Indonesia’s Kutai United 3-2 in a penalty shootout after both sides were locked goalless at full time.
The U-14 squad was led by head coach Claudius Jaunti and assistant coach Jalumin Satangah.
The U-13 team, coached by Md. Nazrulshah Nazir Ahmad with assistant Mars Dulsa, also impressed by winning the Plate Cup, while the U11 team, under Edgar L. Domingo and assistant Wilfred Anak Patrick, finished as Plate Cup runners-up.
IUFC players also picked up individual honours, with Alves Fernandez Asroneday and Farnanddo Dinzly Farddion winning the Golden Glove awards, while Mohamad Family Hakimi claimed the Golden Boot.
IUFC president Moddy Patrick said the success was the result of hard work from players, coaches and team management led by team manager Edgar L. Domingo, as well as strong support from parents throughout the tournament.
He added that the achievement proves players from Sabah’s interior, particularly Keningau, Pensiangan and Pagalungan, have strong potential to compete internationally if given proper exposure and opportunities.
Parent Hadryan Joanis, who accompanied the team, described the U-14 victory as a proud moment for the club, families and the wider interior community, saying it reflects the talent and potential of young players from the region.
He expressed hope that more support and sponsorship would be provided to strengthen grassroots football development in rural areas.
