In commemorating the tragedy today, Donald said the incident on June 6, 1976, left a deep impact on Sabah’s history and its people following the loss of several leaders who had dedicated their lives to serving the state.
He said the contributions, sacrifices and spirit of those who perished remained alive in the memories of Sabahans despite five decades having passed.
“Double Six is not just a historical event to be remembered. It is a reminder that Sabah’s future must always be guided by courage, unity and commitment towards protecting the rights and interests of this state,” he said.
Donald said the spirit behind “Sabah First” was not aimed at separating Sabah from Malaysia, but to ensure that the rights guaranteed to the state under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution were respected, implemented and defended.
He said efforts to secure Sabah’s 40 per cent entitlement, strengthen the powers guaranteed to the state, ensure fair development and uphold Sabah’s position within the Federation remained part of the responsibility of today’s generation.
“The struggle for Sabah’s rights is a continuation of the legacy left by those who came before us,” he said.
Donald also stressed that Sabahans must not allow differences in race, religion or political beliefs to divide the people, adding that unity was essential in strengthening Sabah’s voice.
“Only through unity can we build a better future for our children and ensure Sabah continues to move forward,” he said.
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Double Six tragedy, Donald called on Sabahans to renew their commitment towards defending the state’s rights, dignity and future.
