Fire risk in crowded settlements a 'time bomb'
Small fires in dense squatter areas remain a recurring “time bomb” if housing issues are not urgently addressed, said Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.

He urged the Federal Government to expedite People’s Housing Projects, especially for squatters and fire victims, to reduce exposure to repeated fire incidents.

A proposed 1,000-unit low-cost housing project at Kg Kuala Apas has already been identified and submitted for approval.

Speaking after handing aid to 20 fire victims from five villages in Tawau, he also stressed stricter safety compliance, including proper wiring and safer cooking practices, alongside stronger enforcement against illegal electricity connections.

The 2026 D-MAX also introduces an 8-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift across the range, including the Single Cab variant, making it the first pick-up truck in Malaysia to offer an automatic transmission in that body style.
He said eligible victims may apply for Sabah Maju Jaya housing assistance.
