PENAMPANG: A new community-based tourism initiative, Sarayo Tourism, has been launched in Kampung Tampasak, marking another step forward in strengthening nature-and community-driven tourism in Penampang.
The initiative, developed alongside the Sopuk Recreational Park, showcases the efforts of local residents to generate income by leveraging the natural beauty and cultural uniqueness of their village.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III, Ewon Benedick, said the project reflects the growing potential of grassroots tourism initiatives in the State.
“This community tourism product is among the latest attractions in Penampang and requires continuous effort and support from various parties to ensure its sustainability,” he said during the official launch ceremony.
He commended the villagers for their collective efforts in developing the recreational park and promoting nature-based tourism as a source of income.
To support the initiative, Ewon announced an allocation of RM20,000 to boost entrepreneurial activities by Koperasi Tampasak Penampang Berhad, the cooperative spearheading the project.

An additional RM100,000 was allocated for the construction of a road to improve access to a residential area in the village.
Set amidst lush greenery and clear rivers, the Sopuk Recreational Park and Sarayo Tourism site offers visitors a tranquil, nature-focused experience.
Among its attractions are river exploration activities accessible via jetty transport and traditional “sulap stay” accommodations that provide an immersive village lifestyle experience.
The destination is expected to appeal to families, groups, and organisations seeking a peaceful retreat while remaining accessible by road.
Also present at the launch were Moyog State Assemblyman Donald Peter Mojuntin and Sabah Director of Suruhanjaya Koperasi Malaysia, Awang Ruslli Mohammad.
The development underscores a broader push across Sabah to promote sustainable tourism driven by local communities, ensuring economic benefits remain within rural areas while preserving natural and cultural heritage.
