School proceeds as usual after Sook fire: Dept

SOOK: School sessions at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Binanon here will proceed as usual despite part of the school building being destroyed in an early Wednesday fire.

Sabah Education Department Director Datuk Raisin Saidin said this is possible as another block of the school remains usable to accommodate students.

He noted that the school has only 31 students in total, and the existing capacity is sufficient.

“This is a low-enrolment school, and with one remaining block consisting of four classrooms and a small number of students, teaching and learning sessions can continue without disrupting school operations,” he said on Thursday.

In the incident, five classrooms – including Year 1 and Year 2 classes – a mini hall, ICT room, science room, and sports equipment store were reported to be completely destroyed, covering an estimated area of 25 by 90sq ft.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre reported that an emergency call was received at 5.22am, prompting a team from the Sook Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to be dispatched to the scene, located approximately 32 kilometres from the station.

However, the operation faced challenges as road access to the location was not passable for fire engines and could only be accessed by utility vehicles.

Sook Fire and Rescue Station Chief Faisal Ahmad said the fire was believed to have started around 1am before the emergency call was received.

“The fire involved several school building blocks that were completely destroyed. Firefighters faced difficulty accessing the location due to impassable routes, but checks at the scene confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries,” he said, adding that the operation was fully concluded at 11.05am.

The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation, he added.
