MIRI: A hornbill, Sarawak’s most recognisable wildlife symbol, was rescued from an industrial site here after it was believed to have flown into a factory wall and collapsed from heat exhaustion, according to Sarawak Tribune.
Firefighters from the Lutong station were deployed at about 4.30pm to a factory in Kuala Baram Estate, where the bird was found grounded inside the compound, disoriented and unable to fly.
The rescue operation was led by Lutong fire station chief Henry Jugah and his team, who secured the hornbill using standard handling procedures to minimise stress.
The bird was later handed over to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation at Piasau Camp for further assessment and rehabilitation.
Preliminary findings suggest the hornbill may have struck part of the building structure, highlighting the risks faced by wildlife as natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, with its recovery dependent on whether it sustained internal injuries.
