Kota Kinabalu: Artists should be true to themselves rather than chase profit, according to Asoc. Prof Dr Mohammad Puad Bebit
“Artwork made purely for money will not stand the test of time,” the Universiti Malaysia Sabah Azman Hashim Gallery Director said at the Sabah Art Gallery’s recent Eksplorasi Karya Agung exhibition.
“Every painting starts with interest. From interest comes effort and from effort comes a painter. I believe every painter starts out as a hobbyist. It is that interest, backed by hard work, that eventually turns a hobby into a career,” said Puad, who is also Sabah Visual Art Association Vice President.
He said there are three types of visual artists, namely, those who paint as a hobby, commercial painters and fine art painters, pointing out that understanding which group one belongs to is key to growth.
