Ministry mulls setting up State Sports Academy
Kota Kinabalu: The Education and Innovation Ministry is mulling to establish a State Sports Academy in future, said its Assistant Minister Jennifer Lasimbang.Lasimbang said the ministry is committed to ensure that students who excel in sports will also attain the same accomplishment academically.

"With the newly set up ministry in Sabah, it will look at education in all aspects," she said after officiating the prize presentation ceremony for the HSBC Junior 7s 2018, at the Eagles Rugby Club Arena, here, Saturday.

As such, she said, the ministry will find the best platform for students to be excellent in both co-curriculum activities and academics. She also said the ministry is dedicated to develop rugby among students, especially talented young players.

Towards this end, Lasimbang said, among the programmes proposed would be a study trip and a tie-up with New Zealand's education authorities as the country is well known for top rugby players in the world.

"Such bilateral initiatives can further boost the sport apart from the efforts by the Sabah Rugby Union, together with the corporate sector who are serious in helping the locals to excel in rugby," she said after officiating the prize presentation ceremony for the HSBC Junior 7s 2018, at the Eagles Rugby Club Arena, here, Saturday.

She said, early efforts should be continued to unearth rugby talents, especially after the recent achievement of the State's women's rugby team in grabbing a gold medal in Sukma.

"We will provide our full support to polish such talents so that they will be champions in any event.

"Sabah has a pool of talented athletes who can represent the State internationally."

The inaugural tournament was organised by Sabah Rugby Union and participated by 34 teams from primary and secondary schools in Sabah.

The Boys Under-11 category was won by SK Sg. Anib, while the Boys Under-14 and Boys Under-16 were won by SMESH and SMK Taman Fajar, respectively.

SMK Tungku came out on top in the Girls Under-14 category, while the Girls Under-16 title was won by Maktab Sabah.

For the Women's Open category, it was won by ERC Green Fern. Also present were Sabah Rugby Union president Dr Vela Tan, Sabah Rugby deputy president Dr KH Tan, and Sandakan HSBC branch manager J. Sarad Pillay. - Mardinah Jikur
