Sydney will bring back £500 (equivalent to RM2965.01) worth of books for her class, a trophy, and receive publicity during the coming year, apart from appearing on a ‘thank you’ page at the front of new Cambridge textbooks.
Kuala Lumpur: Sydney Engelbert of Keningau Vocational College has emerged regional winner for Southeast Asia and Pacific of the 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards in Malaysia.

She will bring back £500 (equivalent to RM2965.01) worth of books for her class, a trophy, and receive publicity during the coming year, apart from appearing on a ‘thank you’ page at the front of new Cambridge textbooks.

The announcement was made by the International Education group at Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

Now in its sixth year, the award aims to celebrate achievements of teachers around the world and Cambridge received 14,840 nominations from 141 different countries this year.

It gives students, parents and peers the chance to nominate a primary or secondary school teacher to thank them for their outstanding commitment.

Commenting on her success, Sydney said it is important create a learning environment rooted in cultural exchange to help students develop the practical and communication skills needed for the future.

“I am proud of the success my students have had as part of our online exchange that is centred around cultural competence and exploring topics beyond the standard curriculum,” she said.

International Education Managing Director Rod Smith said 44 million teachers is needed worldwide by 2030 if the world is to meet the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 of inclusive and equitable quality education.

“For this to happen, Cambridge believe we should be celebrating the profession and highlighting hard-working teachers instilling a love of learning, often in difficult environments.

“I wish to congratulate Sydney Engelbert for her immense accomplishments, which I am sure will inspire teachers and learners across Malaysia,” he said.

The public can now vote for their favourite teacher out of the nine regional winners to become the overall winner of Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards 2024 before May 6, for an announcement on May 29.
