MORE than a decade ago, we use to call reporters as journalists. To become a journalist, people studied Journalism. People worked as journalists or reporters in the main print media which was the newspapers. However with the invent of new technologies, newspapers or the print media has faded.  

People no longer depend on the newspapers for news.  People have switched to the electronic social media such as the internet, facebook, Instagram, etc. Today people call this field as Mass Comm. What is Mass Comm? 

Mass communication (or Mass Comm) can be defined as the process of creating, sending, receiving, and analysing messages to large audiences via verbal and written media. It is an expansive field that considers not only how and why a message is created, but also the medium through which it is sent. 

These mediums are wide-ranging, and include print, digital media and the Internet, social media, radio, and television. Mass communication is multi-disciplinary in nature, incorporating elements of related fields such as strategic communication, health communication, political communication, integrated marketing communications, journalism, and more. 

Mass communication professionals use their knowledge of rhetorical principles and strategic media practices to develop, share, and evaluate effective messages targeting large audiences. Public relations specialists, journalists, broadcast professionals, advertisers and marketers, content writers, graphic designers and illustrators, public health educators, corporate media managers, and other media professionals use mass communication strategies on a daily basis to craft and launch strategic communication plans – from broadcast news to online marketing campaigns and public health announcements – across nearly every industry

What qualities do you need? 

It is not a must that one must have studied mass comm to work in this field. Even if you have studied other majors, you can still enter this field. However, there are qualities and skills that you need to pursue careers in mass comm, which include: 

- Inquisitive nature - Investigative mind - Alert demeanour - Adaptive and tolerant - Good communication skills - Good command over languages - Confident - Enthusiastic - Patient - Ability to differentiate between fact and fake - Ability to adhere to deadlines - Sensitivity to different views and life

In addition, interest to know about various fields such as politics, culture, religion, social and current affairs would be an asset.

Most often people think journalism is all about writing well. While that is true, most educators will tell you that the course is also about a lot of reading. Good writing is developed only if you are an avid reader. Journalism is for people who are ready to explore various opportunities 24/7, without the constraints of cultural upbringing, gender, and are also ready to go beyond geographical boundaries.

Career prospects

Graduates of Mass Communication work in a variety of fields in traditional news media and publishing, advertising, public relations and research institutes. They could also find work as:

- Fashion Photographers - TV Correspondents - Producers - Radio Jockey/ RJ l Public Relations Officers - Content Writers - Work in Marketing/Advertising/Healthcare environment - Financial service sectors - Diplomatic Services
