Kota Kinabalu: The National Civics Academy (AKM) continues its mission to foster a healthier and more united Malaysia through its Fit Madani programme, which drew over 300 participants from various NGOs, government agencies, and universities at Merdeka Square on Monday morning.

AKM Director-General Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin said the programme aims to promote active lifestyles and encourage unity among Malaysians of all backgrounds.

“This programme gathers NGOs and agencies for group exercise activities. It’s part of our effort to ensure Malaysians stay active and healthy,” he told Daily Express.

“What’s most meaningful is that everyone, regardless of background, can come together. This reflects AKM’s hope — to see Malaysians united in any circumstance.”

In addition to the fitness session, the event featured a Rahmah Sales booth, allowing participants to redeem their Sara RM100 assistance for essential goods at discounted prices.

“It’s not just about fitness, but also about community well-being and support. Everyone was happy to join. This is the strength of Sabah — where people of many ethnicities come together,” he added.

Dr Roslan said AKM will continue to organise civic and community-based programmes across Sabah, including Ukhuwah Madani, Kenduri Rakyat, and various sports initiatives.

“Regardless of whether it’s election season or not, we will continue. These programmes instil patriotism and love for the country,” he said.

Commenting on reports that Malaysia has the highest adult obesity rate in Southeast Asia — estimated at 19.7 per cent — Dr Roslan stressed the importance of reversing the trend.

“We want Malaysia to be known for its healthy people — not an obese country. Physical and mental health are both essential for nation-building.

“Mental health means rejecting slander, hatred, and division. A civilized Malaysian is one who chooses truth and harmony,” he said.
