City’s canopy walkway too short
IT IS heartening to see the Atkinson Memorial Clock Tower restored so beautifully, befitting its status as a cherished heritage landmark.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the citizens who fought so hard to preserve this iconic structure, saving it from demolition and inappropriate development.

The new 500-metre Canopy Walkway is a welcome addition, giving both locals and tourists the chance to experience one of the city’s remaining pockets of rainforest.

However, its design raises some questions. I had expected the Canopy Walkway to connect the Atkinson Memorial Clock Tower directly to the Signal Hill Observatory Tower and vice versa, creating a cohesive historical and scenic route.

Instead, the current Walkway ends abruptly, offering only partial views of the city through foliage, while the Signal Hill Observatory Tower remains inaccessible and feels like a separate attraction.

This is a significant missed opportunity to showcase panoramic views of the city with its surrounding islands.

The Walkway would also benefit from more educational elements. Information about the trees, some of which may be over a few decades old as well as interpretive panels on Kota Kinabalu’s landmarks would greatly enrich the visitor experience. I also have practical concerns. Are the entrance fees for locals and tourists intended to apply to all community members?

The policy currently makes no mention of special considerations for seniors, children or persons with disabilities (OKU).

This omission raises concerns about whether these groups will be inadvertently excluded from a public space meant to be accessible to everyone?

In addition, during my recent visit, the public toilets were closed, an unacceptable oversight for a site welcoming visitor.

Finally, although the Atkinson Memorial Clock Tower is visually neat and well maintained, the surrounding landscaped area, manicured yet minimal, unfortunately resembles a memorial park on the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu.

This impression is further reinforced by weed-filled plots where flowering plants were presumably intended.
