BEIJING: A 38-year-old woman broke down in tears at a matchmaking market in Guangzhou’s Tianhe Park after repeated unsuccessful attempts to find a suitable partner, with a video of the incident widely shared online.
According to reports, the woman holds a master’s degree from a leading university, works as an executive at a foreign company, earns about 500,000 yuan a year and owns both a home and a car in Guangzhou.
Despite being regarded by many as a highly desirable match, those present said her age had become a significant obstacle in her search for a partner.
Witnesses said she crouched beneath a tree and cried after what was reportedly her 28th blind date, during which she was again told she was “not suitable” for the other party.
An elderly woman reportedly attempted to comfort her, saying: “She’s such a great girl — educated, capable, just a bit older. If she were five or six years younger, with her qualifications, she’d be snapped up instantly here.”
Others at the matchmaking market echoed similar views, but the remarks appeared to deepen the woman’s frustration following repeated rejection.
Addressing the crowd through tears, she said: “I’m already 38, but I don’t want to just settle. I have a career, I’ve been single my whole life, and I want someone like me. I earn 500,000 yuan a year — can’t I find someone who matches that? I just want to find someone with similar qualifications who suits me. Why is it so hard?”
