Kota Kinabalu: The Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) confirmed that a woman who sustained serious injuries, including a fractured shoulder and leg, in an accident after a hiking activity at Bukit Chanang, near Keningau, is eligible to receive benefits under the Lindung 24/7 (Lindung 24 Jam) scheme.
In a statement Friday, Perkeso said Brissty Vidalyn Felicianus, 33, who is an active contributor under the scheme, was involved in an accident on June 2 when the four-wheel-drive vehicle she was travelling in veered into a ravine while descending from the hiking starting point.
“As a result of the accident, Brissty suffered a fractured right shoulder and right leg, minor injuries on the left side of her head and other parts of her body. She is reportedly receiving treatment at Keningau Hospital.
“As an active contributor, she is eligible for temporary disability benefits, which serve as income replacement during her certified medical leave by a medical officer,” it said.
Perkeso said Brissty has been issued a medical leave certificate until June 15 and is scheduled to undergo surgery to insert metal implants to treat her fractures.
“Perkeso’s Prihatin Squad visited the victim at her home on June 9 to obtain the necessary information. We will continue to monitor her condition and are ready to provide rehabilitation treatment to ensure she can return to work.
“The incident involving the Keningau Community Rehabilitation Organisation employee showed that accidents can occur at any time and are not limited to the workplace,” it said.
Perkeso said it has received several non-work-related accident cases within days after the implementation of the Lindung 24/7 scheme, further reinforcing the need for a more comprehensive protection.
“This proves that social protection should not be limited solely to working hours. As such, comprehensive social security coverage is essential to prevent workers from facing financial hardship when disaster strikes,” it said.
The non-work-related accident scheme was introduced to ensure workers in Malaysia have continuous protection in the event of unforeseen incidents that may affect income, health and family well-being.
Perkeso said through this initiative, contributors who are injured outside working hours remain protected by a social safety net that supports their recovery and helps them resume their lives in a more structured manner.
