THE 50th anniversary of the Double Six tragedy is a reminder for Sabahans to continue defending the State’s rights, unity and future, said Moyog Assemblyman Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin.
Donald said the tragedy on June 6, 1976 remained a significant event in Sabah’s history, following the loss of leaders who had dedicated their lives to serving the State and its people.
He said although five decades had passed, the sacrifices, contributions and spirit of those who perished continued to be remembered.
“Double Six is not merely an event to be remembered. It is a reminder that Sabah’s future must always be guided by courage, unity and commitment to protecting the rights and interests of this State,” he said in a statement, Saturday.
Donald said the spirit of “Sabah First” was not about separating Sabah from Malaysia, but ensuring the State’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution were fully respected, implemented and defended.
He said the pursuit of Sabah’s 40 per cent entitlement, greater state powers, fair development and recognition of Sabah’s position within the Federation remained the responsibility of the current generation.
“Today’s generation must continue the legacy of those who came before us by ensuring Sabah’s rights and aspirations remain protected,” he said.
Donald also called on Sabahans to remain united regardless of race, religion or political differences, saying unity was crucial in strengthening the State’s voice.
“Only through unity can we strengthen Sabah’s position and ensure a better future for our children,” he said. He concluded by urging Sabahans to renew their commitment towards protecting the State’s rights, dignity and future in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Double Six tragedy.
