Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Road Transport Department (JPJ) launched a Special Hari Raya Aidiladha Operation from May 24 to May 31 across the state.
Sabah JPJ director Datuk Mohd Harris Ali said the operation aims to ensure smooth traffic flow, improve compliance with traffic regulations, enhance public transport efficiency and reduce road accidents and fatalities.
He said enforcement would focus on nine major offences commonly linked to fatal road accidents, including speeding, running red lights, overtaking on double lines, driving on emergency lanes, failure to wear seat belts or helmets, queue-cutting, using mobile phones while driving, overloading heavy vehicles and dangerous driving.
Harris said enforcement teams had been instructed to increase the Perception of Being Caught (POBC) at 18 accident-prone points statewide through physical enforcement, patrols, undercover operations and snap checks.
He added that teams would also assist road users in the event of breakdowns or accidents.
He stressed that there will be no travel restrictions for goods vehicles during the operation period, but operators must comply with permit conditions and avoid overloading.
From May 24 to May 26, a total of 4,243 vehicles were inspected, with action taken against 481 vehicles and 11 vehicles seized.
Between Jan 1 and May 21 this year, JPJ Sabah inspected 227,235 vehicles, with action taken against 21,339 private vehicles, 6,294 goods vehicles and 633 public service vehicles.
He also said JPJ would continue Ops Luxury against high-end vehicles without valid road tax or insurance, adding that 34 luxury vehicles, including BMW, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Supra and Lexus models, had been seized so far.
