Kota Kinabalu: Several corporate bodies donated essential items to victims of the Kg Bahagia fire in Sandakan at the Welfare Services Department’s Sembulan Depot on Thursday.
Sandakan Municipal Council President Datuk Walter Kenson received contributions from Petronas, Sabah Electricity (SE), BTC Group, Hasani Group of Companies and Samima Books and Stationery.
Items donated included food baskets, ready-to-eat meals, bread, daily necessities, blankets, school supplies, uniforms, bags, as well as baby and adult diapers. The aid will be transported by road to Sandakan.
Walter thanked all donors on behalf of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), noting that assistance had come from 150 NGOs and private organisations within five days of the incident.
Meanwhile, BTC Group, Hasani Group of Companies and Samima Books and Stationery also provided direct aid worth about RM200,000 to help ease the victims’ burden.
The companies focused on school-related items to ensure affected children can continue their education despite the disaster.

They hoped the contributions would not only meet immediate needs but also encourage victims to rebuild their lives.
McDonald’s Malaysia’s Sandakan teams distributed nearly 2,000 meals and beverages to affected families, frontliners and volunteers on the ground.
Further assistance is ongoing, with the Sandakan teams set to distribute an additional 4,000 meals across five PPS through to the end of the week, ensuring continued support for those impacted, according to a statement.
In total, McDonald’s aims to provide more than 6,000 meals to the affected community as part of its efforts to help ease the burden during this difficult time.
“During times like this, what matters most is that communities come together and ensure no one is left to face the situation alone.
The response we’ve seen across Sandakan reflects that shared responsibility, and we hope these collective efforts bring some comfort to those affected,” said Dato’ Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia.
