SEMPORNA: A workshop on Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECM) has identified three potential community-led marine conservation sites in Semporna, marking progress toward recognising existing grassroots efforts.
The sites are Larapan Island (300 hectares), Melanta Silawa (285 hectares), and Pulau Omadal (389 hectares), each reflecting strong local stewardship despite varying challenges.
Officials and conservation groups stressed that conservation is already being practised by local communities and now requires formal recognition, support, and a Sabah-specific framework. Speakers highlighted shared responsibility, the importance of community ownership, and the need for flexible, locally grounded approaches.
Participants agreed to refine site boundaries, strengthen data, and develop a state-level OECM framework to enable formal recognition and long-term sustainability.
