SANDAKAN: Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong has raised concerns over cleanliness and maintenance issues at the luggage storage area of Sandakan Airport.
He said the area emits an unpleasant odour, causing discomfort to airport users, staff and visitors passing through the facility.
“The situation not only reflects poorly on public facilities but may also affect the experience of visitors using the airport as a main entry point to Sabah,” he said after inspecting the site.
Calvin said he was also informed that water had begun to accumulate in the area.
He said the issue is believed to be caused by clogged drainage or poor maintenance, which, if left unresolved, could pose hygiene, safety and health risks.
He stressed that airports are key public facilities as they serve as the first point of contact for tourists, visitors and investors arriving in the state.

As such, he said cleanliness, maintenance and efficient facility management must be given priority to preserve Sabah’s image.
He said issues such as foul odour, stagnant water and blocked drainage should not persist as they reflect weaknesses in monitoring and upkeep.
Calvin has submitted a formal complaint to Malaysia Airports (SBH) Sdn Bhd urging immediate remedial action.
He said he will continue monitoring the matter to ensure prompt resolution for the comfort of all airport users.
