PENAMPANG: A rise in rodent activity in residential and commercial areas has raised concerns over public health and environmental cleanliness.
Penampang Municipal Councillor and Public Utilities Committee Chairman Richard Chong said he has received numerous complaints from residents and business operators about the issue.
He said the problem not only causes inconvenience but also poses potential health risks, while also highlighting weaknesses in waste management and overall environmental hygiene.
Chong noted that improper handling of food waste, illegal dumping, and poor sanitation are among the main factors contributing to the increase in rodent populations.
He added that the Municipal Council’s Health Officer, Bainis Lutot, is carrying out targeted control measures, including the application of rodenticide at suspected nesting and harbourage sites.
However, he said enforcement and control measures alone are not sufficient to fully resolve the problem.
Chong urged homeowners to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness within their premises and surrounding areas.
He said preventive steps include proper waste disposal, avoiding the accumulation of food waste, and eliminating potential nesting sites.
Residents and business operators were also advised to ensure proper waste containment, avoid illegal dumping, maintain clean surroundings, and report serious infestations to the authorities.
He added that coordinated efforts between the authorities and the community are necessary to effectively manage the situation, and said monitoring will continue alongside longer-term solutions.
