Kota Kinabalu: The 5th Sasa novice swimming competition organised by Sabah Aquatic Sports Association (Sasa) was successfully held at the Penampang Sports Complex swimming pool on March 9.

A total of 139 swimmers from four affiliate clubs took part in the one-day competition which was divided into group six (age 7 under), group five (8-9), group four (10-11) and group three (12-13).

Penampang Preppies Swimming Club (PPSC) were the biggest group winners by taking five individual titles.

Edric Connor Liew Kett and  Esmeralda Ava Lee brushed aside their competitors  in the group five  category with six golds each to take the boys and girls titles respectively.

The club also ruled supreme in group four with Kesden Kan Yong You taking home the boys title with three golds and three silvers while Anneliese Janelle Lo captured the girls title with five golds and one silver.

Their other title came from Shayna Vyanna Lee who won six golds in the girls group three category.

Meanwhile, PJMS Swimming Club (PJMS) swimmers took home two titles through Nur Issabella Yong  Abdullah in girls group six with three golds and Aarif Liew Lii Hong in boys group three with five golds while  Tharun Sasitharan of Blue Marlin Swimming Club (BMSC) was the boys group six winner with three golds.

Sasa president Daniel Lee in a statement released on Monday congratulated all the winners and those who have achieved their personal best time.

“Hopefully these swimmers will continue to train hard and progress further towards qualifying for the national championship, and get to represent the country one day,” he said.

He also extended his thanks to the Youth and Sports Ministry, Sabah Sport Council and Sabah Sport Board for their support.

He added that they are looking forward to the annual Sabah Invitational Age Group competition which they will be hosting later this year at the Aquatic Centre in Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex following its reopening in February.

“Hopefully this will be our Sukma team’s final preparation before the actual games in Sarawak this year. However, there are still some details that have to be worked out with all the stakeholders and we will then see if the situation permits”.
