Sandakan the big winners
All the winners with officials after the prize presentation.
Kota Kinabalu: The Sandakan contingent were the big winners with its players delivering nine titles in total at the Sandakan leg Sabah Tennis juniors tournament held over the weekend.

Shawn Alfie Silvester (boys Under-16 singles), Bradley Oscar Johannes (boys Under-12 singles), Bradley Oscar and Mohd Faziezan (boys Under-12 doubles) and Sandra Allysa Silvester (girls Under-10 singles) won their respective titles outright.

The home players that won the other five titles from partnership with other districts’ players were Sandra Allysa Silvester (girls Under-10 doubles with Kota Kinabalu’s Hailey Chong Ee Wen), Muhd Ryan Rafeeq Rommeh (boys Under-10 doubles with Kota Kinabalu’s Christian Lee), Scharllotte Avryll Silvester (girls Under-14 doubles with Lahad Datu’s Nur Allyda Qalesya Mohd Ali), Harith Jay Sunil (boys Under-14 doubles with Penampang’s Nathan Guansing) and Farith Athmar Jamludin (boys Under-16 doubles with Lahad Datu’s Mohd Eizlan Mikhail).

A total of 18 events were contested over three days and the other winners were Muhd Ammar Imran (Keningau – boys Under-10 singles), Elisha Chong Ee Lei (Tawau – girls Under-12 singles), Nur Allyda Qalesya (Lahad Datu – girls Under-14 singles), Mohd Eizlan Mikhail Aslan (Lahad Datu – boys Under-14 singles), Miza Rasyidah Zakirah Mohd Rasyid (Keningau – girls Under-16 singles), Nur Rafiqah Mohd Nor (Penampang – girls Under-18 singles), Samuel Guansing (Penampang – boys Under-18 singles), Miza Rasyidah Zakirah/Nurfarhana Natasha (Keningau/Kota Kinabalu – girls Under-18 doubles), Samuel Guansing/Isa Ueno Dares (Penampang – boys Under-18 doubles).

Sandakan District Tennis Association president Silvester Lawai was satisfied with the achievements of his players and attributed their success to the support from the parents and coaches.

He praised tournament officials as well as Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh and its secretary Tito Latoja for their input to ensure the success of the tournament.

He also expressed his gratitude to Sandakan Industrial Training Institute’s director Azmi Rahman Mat Zuini and its tennis club’s president Suhaidi Mustar for permission to use two of their tennis courts for the Under-12 categories.

Meanwhile, Johnson thanked Sandakan’s Member of Parliament Vivian Wong who was the main sponsor of the event and he hopes the staging of the tournament will help to improve the players further and also to motivate more parents to encourage their children to take up tennis.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Tang Szu Ching representing Vivian.
